The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has urged youths in the state to reject thuggery, violence, drug abuse and irresponsible use of social media, stressing their important role in building a peaceful and secure society.
CP Ama made the call during activities marking the 2026 International Youth Day, including a walk against thuggery and digital violence in Anambra State.
The Police Commissioner said the theme of the 2026 International Youth Day, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” reflects the shared desire of young people for dignity, opportunity, security and a better future.
He emphasised the importance of sports in youth development and crime prevention, noting that organised sporting activities could promote discipline, teamwork, confidence and positive relationships while keeping young people away from criminal influences.
According to him, preventing crime requires collective efforts, as negative peer pressure, drug abuse, poverty, unemployment, intolerance and manipulation can expose young people to criminal activities.
CP Ama also warned that the threat of criminal exploitation now extends to the digital space, where social media platforms can be used to spread misinformation, incite violence and recruit youths into criminal activities.
He therefore urged young people to resist being used as instruments of violence or digital thuggery, stressing that their future was more valuable than temporary rewards.
The Commissioner called for stronger collaboration among the Police, youths, parents, schools, religious and traditional leaders, civil society organisations and communities to prevent crime and promote peace.
CP Ama assured youths that the Anambra State Police Command remained committed to creating a safe environment where young people could pursue their dreams and achieve their aspirations through legitimate means.
“Our young people are not the problem. You are an important part of the solution,” he said.
The Commissioner urged Anambra youths to use the International Youth Day celebration to renew their commitment to peace, responsible citizenship, positive use of technology and the rejection of crime and violence.
