President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate intervention of the Federal Ministry of Works on the deteriorating Benin-Agbor-Asaba and Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti road corridors, following mounting hardship faced by motorists and commuters.
The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, said the directive was aimed at restoring movement along the affected routes while permanent solutions are being pursued.
According to Umahi, the President directed the Ministry to take urgent corrective measures after reports of severe traffic congestion and difficult road conditions left motorists and commuters stranded for several hours and, in some cases, days.
The Minister of State for Works has been directed to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis across Ekiti and Kogi States to assess the situation and commence emergency remedial works.
The intervention was already underway as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, with ministry officials deployed to the affected areas.
Meanwhile, Umahi travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees to coordinate an emergency response on the strategic Benin-Agbor-Asaba corridor.
A stakeholders’ meeting in Benin is expected to bring together representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments, as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to identify immediate measures to ease the situation.
Umahi also apologised to motorists and commuters affected by the deteriorating road conditions, saying he accepted responsibility for the difficulties being experienced by road users.
The Minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government’s response would go beyond temporary relief, with emergency interventions being implemented alongside plans for permanent rehabilitation of the affected roads.
The Federal Ministry of Works said the coordinated measures are aimed at restoring mobility, reducing travel delays and easing the hardship currently faced by road users along the critical corridors.
