The Federal Government has commenced emergency remedial works to contain the worsening erosion threat along the Obosi Bypass in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The intervention follows a call by the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Victor Umeh, for urgent federal action to protect Obosi, Ogidi and other communities threatened by the expanding erosion crisis.
Umeh had raised the alarm during an on-the-spot assessment of erosion sites in the area on August 15, warning that the scale of the ecological damage was beyond the capacity of individuals or the state government to handle alone.
The senator called on the Federal Government to declare the Idemili Basin an environmental disaster zone and appealed to the Presidency, National Assembly and relevant agencies to urgently intervene.
Following the appeal, officials of the Federal Ministry of Works moved to the Obosi Bypass to assess the situation and commence emergency remedial measures.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, disclosed this after joining federal officials during an inspection of the affected corridor.
Heavy-duty equipment and engineering personnel were deployed to the site as efforts commenced to stabilise the affected section and prevent further damage to the road and surrounding infrastructure.
Ezeobi described the intervention as a welcome development, saying the quick response demonstrated the importance of government acting promptly when critical infrastructure and communities are under threat.
He stressed that protecting the Obosi road corridor was crucial to sustaining transportation, economic activities and the safety of motorists, given its strategic connection to other parts of the South-East.
The intervention comes amid growing concerns over erosion and flooding in parts of Idemili North, where roads, farmlands, buildings and drainage infrastructure have reportedly been affected.
During his earlier assessment, Umeh described the situation at Ugamuma, Obosi, as alarming, noting that expanding erosion gullies had damaged farmlands and roads while putting some buildings at risk.
The senator urged the authorities to act before the situation results in loss of lives and property.
Umeh also acknowledged the efforts of Hon. Eric Anyamene, the NDC House of Representatives candidate for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, who had undertaken palliative measures at some affected locations.
He, however, stressed that the scale of the crisis required substantial government intervention, noting that the cost of the necessary remedial works could run into hundreds of millions of naira.
The senator also raised concerns over the erosion threat in Ogidi and called for urgent measures to protect communities and critical infrastructure across the Idemili axis.
With emergency works now underway at the Obosi Bypass, stakeholders are calling for sustained intervention and a permanent engineering solution to prevent further destruction caused by erosion in the area.
