A United States-based physician, Prof. Tochukwu Nwafor, has donated a Health and Telemedicine Research Centre to Nanka community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The facility, established through the Richard and Caroline Nwafor Foundation in honour of his late mother, Mrs. Caroline Nwafor, is aimed at improving access to quality healthcare for residents of Nanka and neighbouring rural communities.

Speaking during the commissioning of the first phase of the project, Prof. Nwafor said the centre would leverage telemedicine to connect patients in the community with physicians and healthcare professionals across the world.

He explained that while the building infrastructure had been completed, the second phase would involve the installation of advanced technology and medical equipment and is expected to be completed in 2027.

According to him, clinical operations are projected to commence in 2028.

Prof. Nwafor said the centre would not only provide healthcare services but also serve as a global hub for rural health research and collaboration among physicians, researchers, technology experts and healthcare institutions.

He noted that the initiative would help rural residents access specialised medical expertise that may otherwise be difficult to obtain within their communities.

The Traditional Ruler of Nanka, Igwe Godwin Ezeilo, commended the Nwafor family for investing in the development and wellbeing of their community.

He urged other indigenes to emulate the gesture by supporting projects that improve the lives of people at the grassroots.

At a thanksgiving service held at St. Faith Anglican Church, Ubahu, Nanka, Rev. Sunday Chinedu also commended the initiative, stressing the importance of generosity, compassion and service to humanity.

The project is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in Nanka and surrounding communities while creating a platform for international collaboration in rural healthcare research and telemedicine.
