The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26 year old man, Kosisochukwu Edward Ibekwe, in connection with the alleged murder of a 23 year old nursing student, Vivian Chilaka.
Chilaka was reportedly found dead at her residence in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on June 14, with preliminary reports indicating that she was strangled.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, saying the suspect was apprehended on September 4 following what the Command described as credible and actionable information.
According to the Police, preliminary investigation revealed that Ibekwe allegedly gained access to the building by climbing the fence with the aid of a ladder, with an initial intention to sexually assault the victim.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that a struggle ensued between him and Chilaka, during which he allegedly stabbed her with a knife, resulting in her death.
The Police also said the suspect had made claims linking him to other similar incidents within the community.
However, the Command stressed that the allegations are still being investigated and corroborated.
The Police further clarified that the landlord of the building, who had earlier been suspected of having a connection with the killing, has been exonerated following investigations.
The Command urged members of the public to disregard earlier suspicions against the landlord.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, particularly into his alleged connection with other criminal incidents.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended residents of Alor for their cooperation and support, especially those who provided information that contributed to the breakthrough.
The Command assured the public that it would continue to pursue credible leads and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law.
