Natives and residents of Awlaw community in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State have called on Senator Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu North Senatorial District, to explain what they described as the absence of constituency projects in the community over the past four years.
The demand was made on Monday during the monthly meeting of the Awlaw Strategic Development Initiative, held at the Sir GTN Tabansi Civic Centre in Ubaha.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the group resolved that political office holders and those seeking re-election must account for their stewardship and performance before asking for the people’s support.
In a communique read at the meeting, the community specifically urged Senator Ngwu to address what it described as “years of neglect and disdain” towards the people of Awlaw.
Speaking during the engagement, the Coordinator of the Awlaw Strategic Development Initiative, Mr. Imah Felix, expressed concern that the community was often remembered by politicians mainly during election periods.
Imah, who is also the Founder of the Centre for Strategic Leadership and Youth Orientation, CENSTLEYO, said the era of what he described as empty political promises was over.
He claimed that the Federal Government allocates substantial funds for constituency projects through the Zonal Intervention Fund, but alleged that no meaningful project had been executed for Awlaw by its representatives.
He called on lawmakers representing the people to engage directly with their constituents and prioritise projects based on the actual needs of their communities.
Imah also rejected the practice of presenting motorcycles or tricycles as the major form of empowerment for the community, insisting that residents would demand more impactful interventions from elected representatives in the next political dispensation.
He said the community would scrutinise the performance of political office seekers before deciding who deserves its support in 2027.
Also speaking, Ichie Martin Aguzi commended Imah for what he described as an effort to enlighten residents on political developments and governance.
Aguzi said the Awlaw community fully supports the initiative and its continued engagement on issues affecting the development and political future of the community.
