The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the alleged murder of a police inspector, Henry Effiong, attached to the residence of the state Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Rex Anunobi.
The suspects, identified as 31 year old Olivia Patrick and 25 year old ThankGod Maurice, were reportedly arrested at the scene shortly after the incident was reported.
The Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the Police Command.
According to the statement, following the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and directed that those found responsible be brought to justice.
In compliance with the directive, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, alongside the Divisional Police Officer of the New Owerri Division, visited the scene.
The police said necessary examinations were conducted, while relevant exhibits were recovered and secured for further investigation.
The case has since been transferred to the SCID for a comprehensive investigation, with efforts ongoing to apprehend other suspects who are currently at large.
The Commissioner of Police directed the investigating team to ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
CP Bosso also commiserated with the family and colleagues of the deceased inspector, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the risks and sacrifices associated with police duties.
The Command assured residents that the situation remains under control and that appropriate security measures have been put in place to safeguard lives and property across the state.
It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist the police in the ongoing investigation.
