Nigerian lawyer and Convener of the Security Situation Room, Douglas Ogbankwa Esq., has urged Nigerians to make effective use of Nigeria Police Command control rooms when faced with emergencies or security challenges.
Ogbankwa, in a public safety advisory, said police control rooms across the country provide an important channel through which members of the public can report emergencies and request police intervention.
He advised members of the public who contact a state police control room to clearly explain the nature of the emergency and provide accurate details about their location to enable responding officers to identify the situation and act appropriately.
According to him, callers should remain calm and patient while communicating with control-room operators, while providing a clear description of their address and other relevant information that could assist officers responding to the situation.
He further encouraged members of the public to maintain communication with the control room where necessary until assistance arrives, particularly during emergencies.
Ogbankwa also stated that police control rooms can serve as a point of contact for members of the public seeking information about security situations within their respective states.
He added that, depending on the nature of a complaint, members of the public could be directed to appropriate police units, including bodies responsible for handling complaints of police misconduct.
The legal practitioner emphasised that Nigerians should use police emergency channels responsibly and provide truthful and relevant information when reporting incidents.
He also advised members of the public to verify official police contact information through reliable government or police sources, as emergency numbers and operational contacts may change.

Ogbankwa’s advisory comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen communication between law enforcement agencies and members of the public in the prevention of and response to crime.
