The Abia State Government has announced plans to hold a Solemn Assembly and Covenant Renewal Service on Thursday, September 24, 2026, as the state prepares for another electoral season ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event, themed “Remembering the Covenant,” will take place at the JAAC Secretariat Auditorium in Umuahia.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Coordinator of the programme, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, announced the plan during a joint press briefing in Umuahia alongside the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.
Nwachukwu said the programme is intended to thank God for what the administration described as His faithfulness to Abia and to renew the covenant entered into with God during the state’s 2023 rededication exercise.
According to him, the forthcoming gathering is being organised as another election season approaches, with the government seeking prayers and divine guidance for the state.
He recalled that following the 2023 election, the state government, in collaboration with Christian leaders, organised a seven-day fasting and prayer programme which culminated in the rededication of Abia at Ngwa High School, Aba.
Nwachukwu said a covenant was entered into during that period by the state’s leadership and traditional rulers, with commitments to serve God and work for the welfare of the people.
He explained that unlike the 2023 open-field rededication, the September 24 Solemn Assembly will be an invitation based event involving government officials, traditional rulers and religious leaders.
Expected participants include the Governor and Deputy Governor, First Lady, elected officials at federal, state and local government levels, political appointees, Permanent Secretaries, Directors, Local Government Heads of Service, Treasurers and church leaders.
The Commissioner also disclosed that the spiritual activities will begin with a three-day fasting and prayer programme from September 21 to 23, to be observed by churches across the state in their respective locations.
Thanksgiving services will subsequently be held, with the Seventh Day Adventist Church scheduled for Saturday, September 26, while other churches are expected to hold theirs on Sunday, September 27.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu said the initiative was based on the administration’s belief in seeking divine guidance and committing the affairs of the state to God, particularly as activities surrounding the 2027 elections approach.
The state government said the Solemn Assembly is intended to provide an avenue for thanksgiving, prayer and the renewal of the covenant, while seeking continued peace and prosperity for Abia.
