The Nigeria Police Force has been urged to maintain professionalism, neutrality and strict non-partisanship in the discharge of its responsibilities before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
The call was made at the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO 2026) in Owerri, Imo State, where concerns were raised over the need for effective policing amid Nigeria’s evolving electoral and security environment.
The speaker stressed that the integrity of elections depends partly on citizens being able to participate in the electoral process without fear, intimidation or unnecessary interference.
According to the speaker, the Police have a critical responsibility to protect citizens, political rallies and electoral materials while avoiding actions that could create the perception of political interference.
The Police were also urged to exercise professionalism and restraint, with the warning that individual actions by officers could affect public confidence in the electoral process.
The speaker further emphasised the need for lessons and knowledge gained at CARSPO 2026 to be effectively transmitted throughout the Police Force, including to officers at the rank and file level.
The call comes as political parties, candidates, security agencies and other stakeholders begin preparations for the 2027 elections, with security and public confidence remaining key issues in the conduct of credible elections.
