Sixteen people have been rescued after floodwaters overwhelmed a shuttle bus, tricycle and school bus along the Isiagu Nibo Awka link road in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The victims were rescued by youths from Isiagu after the vehicles became trapped by rising floodwaters during heavy rainfall.
However, one person remains missing after reportedly falling from a tricycle during the incident. Search efforts are ongoing as residents and others continue to look for the missing person.
The Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, visited the scene following the incident and arranged for injured victims to receive medical attention.
The victims receiving treatment are reportedly responding to medical care.
Speaking at the scene, an Isiagu stakeholder, Mr Udochukwu Nnebedum, expressed gratitude for the lives saved and appealed to the Anambra State Government to urgently intervene in the condition of the road.
Nnebedum said the road has become increasingly difficult for motorists to navigate, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding.
He called on relevant authorities to take urgent measures to address the condition of the road and improve safety for motorists and residents who depend on the route.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding on roads and communities across parts of Anambra State.
