The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has approved petrol import permits totalling 830,000 metric tonnes for the fourth quarter of 2026.
The approvals, issued on September 18, 2026, were granted to Matrix Energy, AA Rano, AYM Shafa, NIPCO, Pinnacle Oil and Bono Energy.
The development comes amid an ongoing legal dispute over the continued issuance of petrol import licences. Dangote Refinery is challenging the practice in court, with the case scheduled for further hearing on October 7, 2026.
The latest approvals mean the importation of petrol by selected marketers will continue into the final quarter of the year, despite the expansion of domestic refining capacity.
The NMDPRA has not publicly indicated, in the information available, whether the approved volumes represent the totality of Q4 petrol import permits or only permits issued under the latest approval.
