The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30 year old man, identified as Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, whose decomposing remains were reportedly discovered inside his apartment at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu.
The police said the suspect was arrested on Monday, September 21, 2026, after neighbours reportedly detected an offensive odour from the apartment and forced their way inside, where they allegedly discovered the remains of the woman, identified only as Chinyere.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, preliminary investigation indicates that the alleged killing occurred on September 19, 2026.
The police said the suspect allegedly wrapped the woman’s remains in nylon and concealed them inside the toilet of his apartment. The remains were subsequently evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to identify and contact her relatives.
During preliminary interrogation, police said Emmanuel confessed to the alleged killing and claimed that the incident followed an argument between him and the deceased over allegations concerning who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
The suspect reportedly told investigators that he struck the woman on the head with a pestle during the argument, resulting in her death. The claim remains part of the ongoing investigation and has not been independently established by the court.
Police operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division reportedly rescued the suspect from an angry mob before taking him into custody.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Police Command said the suspect is expected to be arraigned upon completion of investigations.
