Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has pledged to pay outstanding salary arrears owed to primary school teachers dating back to 2001, 2002 and 2003, following the completion of an ongoing verification and recertification exercise.
Governor Soludo disclosed this on Saturday, September 19, 2026, during the commissioning of the newly completed three-kilometre Ozu-Inyabo, Ozubulu-Ihembosi Road in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state.
The governor said he was informed that primary school teachers were owed about 16 months in salary arrears, adding that previous administrations had reportedly verified the debt and paid five months of the outstanding amount about two decades ago.
According to Soludo, the outstanding arrears are estimated at over ₦400 million, although he said the exact amount would be established through the ongoing recertification exercise.
He assured the affected teachers that the state government would commence payment immediately after the verification process is completed.
Soludo also highlighted his administration’s efforts to strengthen local government administration in Anambra, saying the state’s local government law was designed to promote effective and sustainable grassroots governance.
The governor said the administration was committed to preventing situations where workers’ salaries, pensions and gratuities remain unpaid, while ensuring that local governments deliver tangible development projects to residents.
He noted that 137 projects are awaiting commissioning across the state, describing them as part of the development initiatives being implemented at the grassroots.
During the event, Soludo also commissioned the Ekwusigo Local Government Community Hall, CCTV Control Room, Legislative Building and Council Hall, constructed under the administration of the outgoing Mayor of Ekwusigo LGA, Mr Chimezie Obi.
The governor said the projects were aimed at strengthening local government institutions and improving service delivery to residents.
