The Portugal national team reportedly made an offer to José Mourinho before he decided to return to Real Madrid.
According to reports from AS, the Portuguese Football Federation approached Mourinho about taking charge of the national team. However, the coach ultimately turned down the opportunity after Real Madrid came calling, choosing a return to the Santiago Bernabéu instead.
Mourinho’s decision came as Real Madrid sought a new manager, with the Portuguese eventually agreeing to return to the club more than a decade after his first spell in charge. He signed a two year deal with the Spanish giants.
The Portugal job would have represented a significant opportunity for Mourinho to manage his country’s senior national team for the first time. Instead, he opted for another chapter at Real Madrid, where he previously managed from 2010 to 2013.
The reported approach adds another layer to Mourinho’s return to Madrid, particularly given the long-standing relationship between the coach and Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez.
