Venezia have agreed to appoint Davide Nicola as their new head coach, replacing Giovanni Stroppa, who was dismissed following a difficult start to the Serie A season.
The Italian club have reached an agreement with Nicola on a contract running until 2028, with the final formalities dependent on the resolution of his existing contract with Cremonese. The 53-year-old is expected to take charge as Venezia seek to turn their season around.
Stroppa was relieved of his duties on Tuesday, October 13, after Venezia suffered six consecutive defeats in their opening six league matches, leaving them bottom of the Serie A table without a point.
The former coach had guided Venezia back to the Italian top flight after securing first place in Serie B during the 2025/26 campaign. However, the team’s disappointing return to the top division prompted the club to make a managerial change.
Nicola returns to Serie A after his spell with Cremonese, whom he managed between July 2025 and March 2026. He has previously coached several Italian clubs, including Torino, Cagliari, Genoa, Salernitana and Empoli.
He is particularly known for helping struggling teams avoid relegation, having guided Crotone, Salernitana and Empoli to survival in challenging circumstances. Venezia will hope his experience can help them recover from their poor start and climb away from the bottom of the standings.
Nicola’s immediate task will be to prepare Venezia for their upcoming home fixture against Napoli as the club looks to secure its first points of the season and begin its fight for Serie A survival.
