The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an alleged large-scale counterfeit alcoholic beverage operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, seizing products valued at more than ₦2 billion and arresting two suspects.

The operation was carried out on Wednesday by operatives of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate following what the agency described as credible intelligence.

According to NAFDAC, its operatives discovered more than 20 illegal stores operating within makeshift parking spaces at the complex.

The agency said some suspects were allegedly caught blending and counterfeiting popular alcoholic beverage brands, revalidating expired or unsafe drinks for resale, and storing banned imported products.

The products discovered during the raid were seized and evacuated as part of the enforcement operation. Two suspects were also apprehended in connection with the alleged activities.

NAFDAC has urged members of the public to exercise caution when purchasing alcoholic beverages, particularly products from unverified sources, and to report suspicious manufacturing, relabelling, revalidation or sales activities.

The agency advised consumers to pay attention to product labels, expiry dates, packaging and other signs of possible tampering when buying drinks.

Members of the public can report suspicious activities through NAFDAC’s official complaints line: 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322).

The operation underscores ongoing concerns about the circulation of counterfeit and potentially unsafe alcoholic beverages, which may pose serious risks to public health.
