The Enugu State Government has intervened in the case of a 16 year old girl from Nnewe community in Aninri Local Government Area, who was allegedly sexually abused by her father and subsequently banished by her community.

The intervention, coordinated by the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, has provided the teenager with safe shelter and psychosocial support to aid her recovery and protect her from further harm.

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih, assured the survivor of the state government’s commitment to her safety, welfare and emotional well being.

Enih stressed that no child should be blamed, rejected or punished for being a victim of sexual abuse, emphasising that every child deserves dignity, compassion, protection and access to justice.

She added that the government would prioritise the teenager’s physical and emotional needs as she begins the process of recovery.

The state government, under Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable children and strengthening child protection mechanisms across Enugu State.

Meanwhile, efforts to apprehend the alleged perpetrator are ongoing, as he is reportedly on the run. The ministry said it would continue working with relevant authorities to ensure that the allegations are properly investigated and justice pursued in accordance with the law.

The government also commended members of the public who raised the alarm and brought the teenager’s situation to the attention of the authorities, noting that timely reporting can help protect children at risk.

The incident has renewed concerns about the stigma and rejection survivors of sexual abuse may face. Authorities and child protection advocates stress that survivors need care and protection, while allegations of abuse must be handled through appropriate investigative and legal processes.

The Enugu State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring that vulnerable children receive assistance and protection whenever their safety and welfare are threatened.
