The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to remain calm and observe public health precautions following the reported confirmation of an Ebola case in Abuja.
According to a statement attributed to Health Minister Dr Ali Pate, the case was confirmed on October 20, 2026. The patient, a woman who reportedly arrived from Uganda, is receiving treatment in isolation. Authorities have reportedly identified 44 close contacts and commenced contact tracing.
The NOA advised citizens to maintain proper hygiene, wash their hands regularly and avoid contact with the blood or bodily fluids of anyone suspected of infection.
Symptoms of Ebola include fever, headache, severe weakness, vomiting and diarrhoea. Anyone who suspects exposure should contact health officials immediately, even if symptoms have not developed. Those who become ill should seek medical guidance by phone before visiting a hospital.
The agency also urged Nigerians to cooperate with contact-tracing teams, avoid spreading unverified information and refrain from stigmatising patients or their families.
Healthcare facilities were advised to strengthen infection-control measures, isolate suspected cases promptly and report them to the appropriate authorities.
For assistance or to report a suspected case, the public was directed to contact the NCDC toll-free helpline on 6232.
The NOA cited Nigeria’s successful response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak and encouraged continued vigilance, responsible behaviour and reliance on official health updates.
