The Anambra State Fire Service has averted a potential disaster following the overturning of a 45,000 litre tanker loaded with Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, along the Awka Expressway, opposite the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office.
The tanker, belonging to Shafa Petroleum, reportedly overturned after a suspected brake failure linked to an air leak in its braking system.
According to the Anambra State Fire Service, a distress call was received at about 1:08 p.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters to the scene.
Preliminary findings indicated that the tanker’s cab sustained approximately 60 per cent structural damage, while the cargo compartment remained intact. A Toyota Sienna was also involved in the incident.
Firefighters carried out continuous damping down and hazard mitigation operations to prevent a possible fire outbreak. The diesel was subsequently transferred into another tanker under fire safety supervision, while the affected area was secured and declared safe for traffic.
The firefighting team completed the operation and withdrew from the scene at about 5:56 p.m. on the same day.
The Anambra State Fire Service has urged motorists, particularly tanker operators, to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance and ensure that their braking systems and other critical components are in good working condition.
The Service also advised members of the public to report emergencies promptly to the appropriate authorities to prevent loss of lives and property.
