Scientists at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in South Korea have developed an experimental approach to cancer treatment that seeks to transform cancer cells into cells with characteristics similar to healthy ones, rather than simply destroying them.

The research, led by Professor Kwang-Hyun Cho, focuses on colorectal cancer and introduces a potential alternative strategy for managing the disease by reversing some of the abnormal behaviours of malignant cells.

Unlike conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, which primarily target cancer cells for destruction or prevent their multiplication, the new approach explores whether cancer cells can be redirected towards a healthier state.

Using computer modelling of gene regulation, the researchers identified three molecular regulators MYB, HDAC2 and FOXA2 that play important roles in controlling cell development and behaviour.

The team found that simultaneously suppressing these regulators encouraged colorectal cancer cells to develop characteristics resembling normal intestinal cells. Laboratory experiments also revealed changes in genes and proteins associated with healthy cell development.

The approach was further examined in animal experiments, providing additional evidence that manipulating the identified molecular pathways could reduce cancer-related behaviour.

The findings, published in the scientific journal Advanced Science, could contribute to the development of new cancer treatment strategies that focus on reprogramming malignant cells rather than solely destroying them.

However, the technique remains experimental and has not been approved for clinical treatment. Further studies are required to establish its safety, effectiveness and potential application in humans.

The research offers a promising direction for future cancer medicine, although scientists say more work is needed before it can become an available treatment option for patients.
