British singer-songwriter Sam Smith has spoken about their journey towards understanding and embracing their gender identity, describing self-acceptance as a freeing experience.

The Grammy-winning artist shared their reflections during a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, discussing their personal experiences and the challenges of navigating identity while growing up in the public eye.

Smith revealed that although they had long felt different from traditional gender expectations, they only discovered the language to describe their identity when they were around 27.

The singer publicly came out as non-binary in 2019 and announced that they would use they/them pronouns, explaining that they did not identify exclusively as male or female.

Since then, Smith has increasingly embraced feminine elements in their fashion, appearance and artistic expression, attracting considerable attention from fans and social media users.

Reflecting on their personal growth, the singer described becoming comfortable with their identity as an important turning point in their life.

Despite online speculation surrounding their appearance and personal journey, Smith has not announced a transition from male to female.
