Godwin Opara, the legendary highlife maestro affectionately known as Kabaka, has breathed his last at the age of 77.
Kabaka, who recently marked his return to the music scene with the acclaimed “Abialam” album in September 2023, bid farewell to the world, leaving a void in the realm of highlife music.
Announcing his demise, Derda Promotions, his management, conveyed the sad news on Thursday, as fans worldwide mourn the loss of a musical icon.
Ammarachi Anyanwu, Chief Operating Officer of Derda Promotions, reminisced about Kabaka’s indelible imprint on the highlife genre, describing him as a gifted songwriter and guitarist whose melodies brought joy to countless admirers.
Kabaka’s musical odyssey traversed decades, genres, and bands, notably co-founding The Oriental Brothers International Band in 1973.
His solo venture with The Kabaka International Guitar Band in 1976 further showcased his musical prowess, producing hits like “Mangala Special” and earning prestigious accolades.
Despite a two-decade hiatus, Kabaka’s return in 2023 with “The Return of Kabaka” album was met with resounding acclaim, garnering over a million streams and securing a spot among the top 100 albums globally.
His profound love for music and unwavering dedication to his craft left an indelible mark on all who encountered him.
Kabaka’s legacy as a highlife legend will endure through his timeless melodies, cherished by fans, family, and the music industry at large.
