The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) made a resounding declaration of regret over their 2023 presidential election choice, vowing never to repeat the error of voting for Bola Tinubu.

In an with Guardian, NEF spokesman Abdul-Azeez Suleiman stressed a shift towards unity and consensus in future candidate selections.

Reflecting on recent events, Suleiman underscored the region’s inclination towards an inclusive, less controversial leader aligned with national interests, highlighting the proclivity of the North to Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, who recently concluded his Ramadan tour in the region and donated some relief items.

“The North made a mistake in voting Bola Tinubu to the presidency in 2023, and it is unlikely that they will repeat the same error in the future,” Suleiman asserted, reverberating the sentiment of regrets amongst northerners about the Tinubu’s administration.

“They have learned from their past misstep and will strive to select a candidate who can unite the country and govern in the best interests of all Nigerians.

“Moving forward, the North will be more cautious in selecting a candidate for the presidency. They will prioritise someone who is seen as more inclusive, less controversial, and more aligned with the interests of all regions of the country.

“The mistake of supporting Tinubu in 2023 has taught them the importance of unity and consensus in selecting a candidate for the highest office in the land,” he added.

Tinubu’s policies have drawn widespread criticism, with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar denouncing them as lacking a human touch, particularly in response to the recent electricity tariff hike.

Despite backlash, Tinubu has maintained optimism, assuring Nigerians of brighter prospects and asserting control over economic challenges.
