The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, into custody regarding an ongoing investigation into a N8,069,176,864.00 money laundering case, according to reports.
Sirika, indicted for his involvement in fraudulent contracts awarded to a company owned by his brother, Abubakar Sirika, arrived at the EFCC’s Federal Capital Territory Command on Tuesday.
The contracts, allegedly awarded without due process, amount to a significant sum, prompting the EFCC to take action against both Hadi and Abubakar Sirika.
Sources within the anti-graft agency, speaking on anonymity, confirmed Sirika’s arrest to The Punch, revealing details of the alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as Aviation Minister.
“Yes, that was Hadi Sirika who was taken into our FCT custody. He is currently meeting with EFCC investigators over the alleged N8,069,176,864.00 aviation ministry contract fraud,” a source revealed.
“The N8,069,176,864.00 aviation ministry contract fraud was carried out in connivance with his younger brother, Abubakar Sirika, through the latter’s company,” another source said.
The investigation focuses on contracts awarded to Abubakar Sirika’s company, Engirios Nigeria Limited, for projects including the construction of airport facilities and procurement of aviation equipment, .
Despite the substantial funds disbursed, authorities found no evidence of completed work, raising suspicions of embezzlement and money laundering.
Abubakar Sirika, also in EFCC custody, is cooperating with investigators, shedding light on the intricate web of financial transactions orchestrated during his brother’s tenure.
