It was a sequence of tragic occurrences as a vehicle in the funeral convoy for Malawi’s late Vice President, Saulos Chilima, killed at least four mourners and injured 12 others.

The accident occurred on Sunday night in the Ntcheu community, central Malawi, as the motorcade was transporting the Vice President’s remains.

Thousands of mourners had lined the streets to pay their respects when the vehicle rammed into the crowd.

Malawian police spokesman, Peter Kalaya, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday morning.

“Due to the impact, two female and two male pedestrians sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures and died whilst receiving treatment.”

This tragedy follows the recent disappearance of a military aircraft carrying the Vice President and other top officials.

The aircraft, which went missing last week, was discovered wrecked with no survivors.

Vice President Chilima and nine others were en route to the funeral of prominent lawyer and former Attorney General, Ralph Kasambala, in Mzuzu when the crash occurred.
