An armed robbery suspect, simply identified by his nickname Bob Jay, met an unexpected end on Friday night when he fell into an open well after raiding a student hostel at University of Cross River State (Unicross), Okuku campus.
Regina, a student of the school told Vanguard that the robbers struck around midnight, attacking students and making off with laptops, phones, and money.
The suspects violently assaulted several students during the raid.
“They were many that came around 12 midnight. They robbed all the students in the Okuku hostel. They stabbed one student, broke the head of another with a stick before escaping with phones, laptops and other valuables,” Regina said.
The well, typically used by students for fetching water to bathe and wash clothes, was uncovered.
It wasn’t until dawn that students discovered Bob Jay’s body inside the well when they went to fetch water.
“Nobody knew that one of the robbers fell into the well until dawn when students went to fetch water and saw the man inside dead. They raised an alarm, and the community people came and took him out and identified him as one of the robbers. Some people said his name is Bob Jay from Mbube, a neighboring village,” she explained.
The police were alerted and arrived to take the body away.
As of now, no other gang members have been identified since the robber’s phone found in his pocket was blurred.
