Fernando Vega has been charged with capital murder following the tragic deaths of his six-week-old twin daughters, Massail and Mirena, who were found unresponsive in their Houston home on October 4, 2023.

If convicted, Vega could face the death penalty, according to reports from the Daily Mail UK.

Previously arrested on April 19 alongside the twins’ mother, 21-year-old Angelina Belinda Calderon, Vega was charged with causing serious bodily harm to a child.

However, after further investigation, his charges were escalated to two counts of capital murder when authorities concluded that he was allegedly solely responsible for the infants’ deaths.

Police arrived at the home on Linden Creek Way on October 4 to find the twins unresponsive on a couch, displaying bruises and discolored skin; one of the infants had visible fractures.

Court documents also revealed that the twins, who had recently been discharged from the hospital, showed signs of malnutrition and dehydration, indicating a lack of proper medical care.

Dr. Jesus Rico, a pathologist at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science, conducted an autopsy on the infants, uncovering bruises, fractures, and signs of dehydration consistent with past abuse.

“One of the twins exhibited evidence of acute brain bleeding and spinal cord injuries, suggesting recent trauma,” the report stated.

In a court hearing on Wednesday, prosecutor Edward Appelbaum said he intends to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the twins’ deaths before finalizing the murder charges.

The case remains under investigation as Vega awaits trial.
