The Kaduna State Police Command has halted a proposed rally in honour of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, citing security concerns and potential threats to public order.

In a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, authorities said they had received credible intelligence that the birthday rally, although meant to show support for Obi, could be hijacked by criminal elements intent on sparking violence and disrupting peace.

The Command emphasized that all political rallies and public gatherings remain suspended across the state until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially greenlights the commencement of political activities.

It also pointed out that multiple political parties had formally notified the police of their party primaries scheduled for the same day as the proposed rally. The overlap, officials fear, could heighten tensions and provoke clashes.

“In view of these developments, the command strongly advises the organisers of the planned Peter Obi rally to suspend any gathering or procession,” the statement read.
“If they wish to honour their principal, such activities should be conducted in a safe and non-disruptive manner.”

The police further warned that anyone found violating the directive would face legal consequences.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace, the Kaduna Command urged residents to cooperate with security agencies to ensure continued public safety across the state.
