Polish authorities confirmed that several drones violated the country’s airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine, with defense forces intercepting and neutralizing some of the objects in what officials described as an unprecedented breach.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk has confirmed that Polish forces shot down drones that entered the country’s airspace as a result of Russia’s ongoing assault on Ukraine. “I received a report from the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces Branches regarding the downing of drones that intruded into our airspace and could have posed a threat. The operation is ongoing,” Tusk stated.
According to Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command, the drones crossed the border during Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory. The Command described the incident as “an unprecedented violation of Polish airspace by drone-type objects,” adding that it posed “a real threat to the safety of our citizens.”
Military officials reported that defensive procedures were activated immediately upon detecting the intrusion. “Polish and allied assets radar-tracked several objects, and the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces made decisions to neutralize those that could pose a threat. Some of the drones that entered our airspace were shot down,” the statement said.
Authorities are now searching for the crash sites of downed drones while monitoring the continuing situation. The Operational Command stressed that Polish and allied forces remain on high alert and fully prepared to respond to any further escalations.
The incident, which underscores the growing risks of spillover from Russia’s war in Ukraine, marks one of the most serious violations of NATO airspace since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
