President Donald Trump of the United States of America has confirmed that the suspected gunman who murdered conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been captured.

Kirk, a strong ally of Trump, was gunned down on Wednesday while delivering a speech at Utah Valley University, sparking a nationwide manhunt.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News on Friday, Trump revealed the breakthrough, coming just two days after the assassination.

“I think with a high certainty, we have him in custody,” Trump said when asked for an update on Mr Kirk’s shooter manhunt. “Everyone did a great job.”

The announcement follows Thursday’s move by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which had released images of the suspect and announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

In a show of tribute, Trump also declared during Thursday’s 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the Pentagon that Kirk would be honoured with a posthumous presidential medal.
