Somalia is set to take over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council on January 1, 2026, marking a significant diplomatic milestone for the East African nation.

The presidency of the UN Security Council rotates monthly among the 15 member states, giving each the opportunity to guide the Council’s agenda and preside over its meetings. Somalia’s assumption of the role comes at a time when the country continues to strengthen its international engagement and rebuild its diplomatic influence after decades of conflict.

Officials in Mogadishu have described the upcoming presidency as a major step toward showcasing the nation’s progress in governance, peacebuilding, and regional cooperation. The Somali delegation to the United Nations is expected to prioritize discussions on global security, counterterrorism, and the impact of climate change on peace and stability—issues that align closely with Somalia’s national and regional interests.

The Council’s January agenda under Somalia’s leadership will include several key sessions on conflict prevention and humanitarian response strategies in Africa and beyond. International observers view the month-long presidency as both a symbolic and practical opportunity for Somalia to reinforce its commitment to global peace and security.
