The Nigerian Military has announced that more than 700 repentant terrorists who passed through rehabilitation under Operation Safe Corridor are now set to be reintegrated into society.
Coordinator of the programme, Yusuf Ali, made the disclosure during a media tour of facilities at the Deradicalisation, Rehabilitation and Reintegration Centre in Gombe, North-East Nigeria.
He explained that there is still widespread misunderstanding among Nigerians about the Federal Government’s structured counterterrorism initiative, stressing that Operation Safe Corridor is designed to restore peace in communities affected by insurgency.
Brigadier-General Ali also dismissed claims that participants of the programme are being recruited into military institutions, insisting the focus remains strictly on deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration into civilian life.
During the facility tour, some of the participants at the centre reportedly shared personal accounts of their involvement in activities that led to their admission into the programme, as part of the rehabilitation process.
The development comes ahead of the planned graduation ceremony for the over 700 individuals who have completed the programme and are now deemed ready to return to their communities after months of structured reintegration training.
