Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been thrown into a fresh crisis as the Supreme Court has nullified the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025.
In a split judgment delivered on Thursday, three out of five justices of the apex court ruled against the appeal filed by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the PDP, effectively invalidating the controversial convention.
Justice Stephen Adah, who read the majority decision, held that the appellants acted in defiance of an existing order of the Federal High Court which had restrained them from proceeding with the convention.
The court further held that the violation of judicial directives rendered the entire exercise legally untenable, leading to its nullification.
The ruling marks a significant setback for the faction of the party that went ahead with the disputed gathering despite legal warnings, deepening the internal crisis rocking the PDP.
Although the full implications of the judgment are still being analysed, the decision is expected to trigger fresh political and legal battles within the party as rival factions jostle for control.
More details are expected as reactions continue to trail the Supreme Court’s verdict.
