Legendary Italian goalkeeper Walter Zenga has highlighted Cristian Chivu’s “many merits” in Inter Milan’s Scudetto success, dismissed Antonio Conte’s injury complaints as exaggerated, and suggested Guglielmo Vicario, Marco Carnesecchi or Elia Caprile as ideal options to succeed Yann Sommer in goal.
Speaking to Italian newspaper Il Giornale, Zenga underlined the importance of former Inter defender Cristian Chivu in the club’s latest title-winning campaign, stressing that the Romanian has played a significant part in the team’s tactical and mental growth. He credited Chivu’s work and influence behind the scenes as one of the keys to Inter’s consistency over the course of the season.
Zenga also took aim at Antonio Conte’s complaints over the number of injuries his team have had to deal with, insisting that Inter faced similar problems but still managed to maintain their level. He pointed out that key players such as Lautaro Martínez, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Denzel Dumfries and Marcus Thuram were all sidelined for extended periods, yet Simone Inzaghi’s side coped with the setbacks and still powered their way to the Scudetto.
Turning to the goalkeeping position, the former Inter and Italy No. 1 acknowledged the importance of planning for life after current first-choice Yann Sommer. Zenga revealed that, in his view, Inter should look to one of three highly rated keepers as a long-term solution, naming Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario, Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi and Empoli’s Elia Caprile as profiles he would seriously consider once Sommer’s cycle at the club comes to an end.
According to Zenga, choosing the right successor would allow Inter to maintain stability at the back while building on the foundation laid during this Scudetto-winning run. His comments reflect both admiration for the club’s current structure and a clear vision of how the Nerazzurri can stay competitive in the coming seasons.
