Russia has declared a ceasefire with Ukraine for May 8–9, while its Defense Ministry has warned that Moscow will launch a “massive missile strike” on Kyiv if Ukrainian forces violate the May 9 truce.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that Russian forces will pause offensive operations over a two‑day period, coinciding with the May 9 Victory Day commemorations, which mark the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. Officials framed the ceasefire as a unilateral step, but tied it directly to strict conditions on Ukrainian military activity during the pause in fighting.

In the same statement, the ministry issued a stark warning that any Ukrainian attempt to conduct strikes or offensive actions on May 9 would trigger a large‑scale response against the Ukrainian capital. Moscow said it is prepared to carry out a “massive missile strike” on Kyiv in the event of what it calls a breach of the ceasefire, signaling that the temporary pause in hostilities could quickly give way to an escalation.

The announcement places renewed pressure on both sides as the dates approach, with the threat against Kyiv raising fears of further civilian casualties and infrastructure damage should the ceasefire collapse. It also underscores how symbolic dates in the Russian calendar are being woven into the messaging and military posture around the ongoing conflict, turning a historic commemoration into a focal point for potential escalation.
