Iran’s World Cup team will be based in Tijuana instead of Arizona after U.S. authorities refused them entry, prompting Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to step in and confirm that the squad will be accommodated in the border city.

According to officials, the team had initially planned to cross into Arizona as part of their preparation and logistical arrangements for the World Cup but were blocked when their entry request was denied by U.S. authorities. The decision forced a swift change of plans, with

Tijuana, a major Mexican city on the U.S. border, emerging as the alternative base.
President Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico would host the Iranian squad in Tijuana, ensuring they have the facilities and security needed to continue their build-up to the tournament. She stressed that Mexico remains committed to supporting international sporting delegations and facilitating their participation in global competitions.

The move means Iran will carry out training sessions, tactical preparations and off-field logistics on Mexican soil, rather than within the United States as initially envisaged. While the denial of entry has added a layer of complexity to their preparations, team officials are expected to work closely with Mexican authorities to minimise disruption ahead of their World Cup campaign.
