Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, has come under the spotlight as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Nigeria Police Force investigate separate allegations involving the institution’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha.
Official documents indicate that the ICPC has issued a third and final notice directing the university to submit key institutional and staff records as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged procurement and administrative irregularities.
The Nigeria Police Force is also investigating a petition alleging forgery, abuse of office, and the award of public contracts to family members and associates in violation of procurement regulations.
Similarly, the EFCC has been petitioned to investigate allegations of contract racketeering, procurement breaches, financial impropriety, abuse of office, and the alleged diversion of university funds, including TETFund research grants and student identity card funds.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the EFCC nor the police has announced the outcome of their investigations. Prof. Kate Omenugha and the university management have also not publicly responded to the allegations.
The investigations remain ongoing, and no findings of wrongdoing have been announced by any of the agencies.
