A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of the member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, at the Kuje Correctional Centre over alleged criminal defamation and false declaration.
Justice Yusuf Halilu issued the remand order following the lawmaker’s appearance before the court, directing that he remain in custody pending further proceedings.
The case was adjourned until July 6, 2026, for the continuation of hearing.
According to court documents, the charges stem from an affidavit allegedly deposed to by Ogah before the FCT High Court in May 2023, in which he was accused of making defamatory statements against the immediate past Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
The prosecution alleged that the lawmaker falsely claimed Onyejeocha influenced judicial proceedings relating to an election tribunal and told her supporters that favourable judgments were secured through her relationship with members of the tribunal panel.
The Federal Government subsequently filed a five-count charge against the legislator, accusing him of criminal defamation, false declaration and acts capable of injuring another person’s reputation under the provisions of the Penal Code.
Justice Halilu directed the authorities at the Kuje Correctional Centre to keep the lawmaker in custody until the next adjourned date or until further orders of the court.
The matter is expected to resume on July 6, when both the prosecution and defence are expected to present their arguments before the court.
