The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has commenced the demolition of illegally erected structures and fence walls encroaching on approved road corridors as part of renewed efforts to enforce urban planning regulations and improve infrastructure development within the Anambra State capital.
The enforcement exercise, carried out on July 1, targeted property owners and developers who extended fences and other structures into designated public road alignments, obstructing road expansion projects and violating approved physical planning standards.
According to the authority, the operation forms part of its ongoing commitment to promoting orderly urban development, protecting public infrastructure and ensuring strict compliance with the state’s physical planning laws.
ACTDA stressed that it will continue to enforce planning regulations without compromise, warning that any form of encroachment on road reserves, obstruction of drainage channels or violation of approved building setbacks will attract appropriate sanctions, including demolition.
The agency urged developers, landlords and property owners to obtain the necessary approvals and adhere strictly to approved building plans before embarking on any construction project to avoid financial losses resulting from enforcement actions.
It further appealed to residents to support the government’s urban renewal drive by reporting illegal developments, road encroachments and other planning violations to the authority through its dedicated public complaints and enquiry hotline.
ACTDA reiterated that the enforcement exercise is aimed at creating a safer, more organised and environmentally sustainable capital city capable of supporting future infrastructure and economic development.
The authority assured residents that similar monitoring and enforcement operations will continue across the Awka Capital Territory to preserve public spaces and ensure compliance with urban planning regulations.
