The Enugu State Government has commenced the comprehensive remodelling of the iconic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu as part of Governor Peter Mbah’s drive to reposition sports infrastructure and promote youth development in the state.

As work begins on the multi-billion-naira project, shop owners and occupants of structures around the stadium have been directed to vacate the premises to pave the way for the reconstruction.

According to the government, the project will transform the ageing facility into a modern sporting complex that meets international standards and is capable of hosting major national and global sporting events.

The scope of the upgrade includes the installation of a FIFA-standard natural grass football pitch, rehabilitation of the athletics track, roofing of spectator stands, replacement and expansion of seating facilities, installation of modern floodlights and a digital scoreboard, as well as improved access control, safety systems and other supporting infrastructure.

The reconstruction is expected to significantly enhance the stadium’s capacity and functionality while providing athletes with world-class training and competition facilities.

The project forms part of Governor Peter Mbah’s broader investment in sports development, youth empowerment and infrastructure renewal aimed at positioning Enugu State as a leading destination for sports, entertainment and tourism.

Upon completion, the remodelled Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is expected to become one of Nigeria’s most modern sporting facilities, capable of attracting major sporting competitions and stimulating economic activities in the state.
