Eight members of the Scripture Union Nigeria who were abducted along the Imo–Anambra boundary while returning from a national conference have regained their freedom after spending 22 days in captivity.
The victims were kidnapped on June 14, 2026, while travelling home from the organisation’s Osogbo Regional Conference.
Among those released are the Director-General of Scripture Union Nigeria, Uwem Cosmas, and a 300-level Law student of the University of Ibadan, Abolarin Tomisin.
Confirming the development in a statement, the President of the University of Ibadan Scripture Union branch, Temidayo Adeboye, said the release was officially communicated to the Students’ Union after confirmation from relevant authorities and representatives of the organisation.
According to him, the freed victims are currently undergoing necessary post-release procedures before returning to their respective destinations.
He also expressed optimism that the affected University of Ibadan student would soon reunite safely with the university community.
A video circulating online shows the released victims alongside other members of the Christian community offering prayers and songs of thanksgiving following their release.
As of the time of filing this report, the circumstances surrounding their release had not been officially disclosed.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Imo State Police Command were unsuccessful, while officials of the University of Ibadan and the leadership of Scripture Union were yet to issue additional statements.
