A Magistrate Court sitting in Umuahia has granted bail to Agwu Ukpo, an Abia State University (ABSU) alumnus, who is standing trial over a viral assault incident that sparked widespread public outrage.
Ukpo, 37, is facing charges of attempted murder, indecent assault, and assault in connection with the incident. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges when he was arraigned before the court.
Following the hearing, which was conducted in chambers, the court admitted the defendant to bail under strict conditions.
According to the state counsel, one of the key bail requirements is that Ukpo must produce either the traditional ruler or the President-General of his community as part of his surety before the bail can take effect.
The case has been adjourned to August 19, 2026, for the continuation of trial.
The incident, which gained widespread attention after videos circulated on social media, generated public condemnation and renewed calls for justice and accountability.
