Nigeria’s ambitious Eko Atlantic project is transforming reclaimed land off the Atlantic coastline into a modern city designed to address urban expansion and coastal erosion in Lagos.
A major feature of the development is the Great Wall of Lagos, an 8.4-kilometre sea defence structure built to shield Victoria Island from the impact of Atlantic Ocean waves and reduce coastal erosion.
When completed, Eko Atlantic is expected to accommodate about 250,000 residents and serve an estimated 150,000 daily commuters with modern infrastructure, commercial centres and residential developments.
Regarded as one of the world’s largest coastal engineering projects, the development is widely seen as a significant step in Nigeria’s urban planning ambitions, although experts continue to assess its long-term environmental and coastal impacts.
