The Enugu State Government has urged residents to remain vigilant and take proactive measures against flooding as the intensity of rainfall increases across the state.
In a public service announcement, the government warned that the ongoing rainy season has heightened the risk of flooding in several communities and called on residents to adopt responsible environmental practices to protect lives and property.
The government specifically cautioned against dumping refuse into gutters, drainage channels, streams, and rivers, noting that blocked waterways remain one of the major causes of flooding and the destruction of homes, businesses, and public infrastructure.
Residents, landlords, business owners, and community leaders were encouraged to keep their surroundings clean and ensure that drainage systems within their communities remain free of waste and other obstructions.
The government also advised people living in flood-prone areas to closely monitor weather forecasts and heed official advisories, including relocating to safer locations whenever necessary.
It further warned members of the public against walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters, stressing that the depth and strength of flood currents can be difficult to determine and may pose serious risks to life.
The Enugu State Government emphasized that preventing flooding requires collective responsibility and appealed to residents to support ongoing efforts to keep the environment clean throughout the rainy season.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while calling on citizens to cooperate in ensuring a safer and healthier environment across the state.
