The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned the alleged publisher of Igbo Times Magazine and iNews, Mr. Ejike Ofoegbu, before a competent court over allegations of publishing false and defamatory reports against the family of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement, saying the arraignment followed the transfer of the suspect from the Department of State Services (DSS) in Awka and the conclusion of police investigations into a petition alleging the publication of fabricated information capable of damaging reputations and inciting public disaffection.
According to the police, the court ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
The Command noted that it would refrain from making further comments on the matter to avoid prejudicing the ongoing judicial process.
The police also urged media practitioners, publishers and members of the public to uphold the principles of responsible journalism by verifying information before publication and complying with existing laws guiding the dissemination of information.
