The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has disclosed that over 316 pro-groups, political structures and support organisations have formally registered with the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The disclosure was made on Friday in Umuahia during a strategic meeting of the party’s State Working Committee (SWC) with representatives of the registered groups.
The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mr Iroegbu Jason Emenike, said the meeting was aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots structure, harmonising its growing support base and ensuring effective coordination among the various groups working for the party and its candidates.
Emenike recalled that the party opened an online registration portal on July 14, 2026, for pro-groups, political structures and other support organisations interested in formally aligning with the Labour Party.
He said more than 316 groups had so far registered through the portal, expressing their commitment to supporting the party’s candidates in the 2027 elections.
Speaking at the meeting held at the party’s state headquarters, the State Chairman, Hon. Peter Azubuike, said the engagement was designed to educate the groups on their expected roles and establish a clear framework for their integration into the party’s structure.
Azubuike stressed that the Labour Party was interested in building a united political movement rather than allowing separate camps to operate within the party.
He warned that groups unwilling to align with the collective agenda of the party would have no place in its political structure, while assuring committed groups of proper integration into its activities and programmes.
The chairman urged the groups to support the administration of Governor Alex Otti and contribute to what he described as the consolidation of the gains of the “New Abia” agenda.
He, however, cautioned the groups against actions that could violate the Electoral Act, assuring that the State Working Committee would monitor their activities to ensure compliance with the law and the party’s agreed framework.
Azubuike also directed the group leaders and members to return to their respective communities and networks to intensify grassroots mobilisation and political engagement in support of Governor Otti and other Labour Party candidates.
The meeting also featured discussions on voter mobilisation, protection of votes, security and the need for committed support groups to be recognised and fully integrated into the party’s activities.
The chairman assured the groups that the party would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and address their concerns within the provisions of the law.
