The Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri, Anambra State, has commenced night flight operations following the completion of its airfield lighting system.

The development follows the installation and upgrade of runway lighting infrastructure by the Anambra State Government under the administration of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.

The project included the replacement of vandalised runway lights and upgrades to other operational facilities, enabling the airport to safely handle aircraft movements beyond daylight hours.

The commencement of night operations is expected to improve the airport’s efficiency, accessibility and operational capacity while providing greater flexibility for airlines and passengers using the facility.

The state government has also upgraded the airport from Category Five to Category Seven, with plans underway to attain Category Nine status and commence full-scale cargo operations.

Since its inauguration in 2021, the Chinua Achebe International Airport has reportedly handled more than 8,624 flights and over 600,000 passengers.

The latest development is expected to further strengthen the airport’s role in promoting connectivity, commerce and economic development in Anambra State and the wider South-East.
