Amid mounting concerns over security challenges, the Federal Government and state administrations are contemplating the establishment of state police, following a high-level meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu with governors at the Aso Rock Villa.

The discussions, prompted by recent spikes in food prices and security incidents nationwide, signify a potential shift towards decentralizing law enforcement to better address local security needs.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed that while the concept is in its early stages, extensive consultations and deliberations will shape its implementation.

“The discussion around the issue of state police is gaining traction. If our government and state authorities agree, it would mark a significant departure in our approach to security,” Idris stated.

Advocates argue that localized policing could enhance effectiveness and community engagement, yet concerns persist regarding potential abuse of power and implications for national unity.

The government also plans to bolster forest security by recruiting and training additional personnel, a move aimed at safeguarding national borders and woodlands.
