The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is gearing up to bring former Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to court on charges of diverting over N10 billion.
As earlier reported by MUK TV that Ahmed faced questioning at the Ilorin Command Office concerning allegations of financial misconduct during his time in office.
A source within the agency disclosed to The Nation, “The ex-governor is under scrutiny for the suspected diversion and mismanagement of N10 billion from Kwara State’s coffers between 2011 and 2019. The investigation, ongoing since 2019, focuses on alleged diversion, misappropriation, and money laundering.”
The EFCC aims to finalize its investigation promptly to proceed with Ahmed’s arraignment before the Federal High Court in Ilorin.
The source emphasized the intention to avoid jurisdiction-related delays, indicating the ex-governor will face trial in Kwara State.
Ahmed, who previously held positions including Commissioner for Finance and treasurer of the Forum of Commissioners of Finance in Nigeria, won the Kwara governorship seat in 2011, succeeding Saraki.
His tenure ended in 2019, and he was succeeded by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.
This isn’t Ahmed’s first encounter with the EFCC; he was previously arrested in 2021 for alleged involvement in a N9 billion fraud case, spending about seven hours in interrogation.
